SAT - Tutoring and Test Preparation Packages

About the SAT

Each year more than two million high school students take the SAT test, which is administered by the College Board. Because nearly every university accepts the SAT as part of its admission process, it is one of the most important examinations a student will ever take in his or her academic career.

Students usually take the SAT in the Spring of their Junior year in high school. This allows them to re-take the exam in the Fall of their Senior year if they are not satisfied with their previous score. Parents can easily register their students online at http://www.collegeboard.com, or by calling (866) 756-7346 toll free. The cost to take the exam is $41.50.

It is important to understand the structure, sections, and scoring system of the SAT. The examination is 3 hours 45 minutes in length and includes three sections: Writing, Mathematics, and Critical Reading (formerly the "Verbal" section).

1. The Writing Section (200 - 800 points)

Length Content Question type
60 min. Grammar, usage, and word choice Multiple choice questions (35 min.) and student-written essay (25 min.)

The student-written essay is ALWAYS the first section of the SAT exam. The writing part of the SAT includes both a multiple-choice question section and a short essay section. The essay measures the student's ability to organize and express his or her ideas clearly, to develop and support his or her main idea, and to use appropriate word choices and sentence structures. Students will be asked to develop a point of view on an issue, and to use reasoning and evidence — based on personal experiences, readings, or observations — to support their ideas.

The multiple-choice writing questions measure the student's ability to improve sentences and paragraphs, and to dentify errors (such as diction, grammar, sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, proper word usage, and wordiness).

2. The Mathematics Section (200 - 800 points)

Length Content Question type
70 min. Number and operations; algebra and functions; geometry; statistics, probability, and data analysis Five-choice multiple-choice questions and student-produced responses

Students can use a four-function, scientific, or graphing calculator. The College Board recommends that students use a scientific calculator for the SAT, although it's still possible to solve every question without a calculator.

3. The Critical Reading Section (200 - 800 points)

Length Content Question type
70 min. (two 25-min. sections and one 20-min. section) Critical reading and sentence-level reading Reading comprehension, sentence completions, and paragraph-length critical reading

The critical reading section, formerly known as the verbal section, includes short reading passages along with the existing long reading passages. Analogies have been eliminated, but sentence-completion questions and passage-based reading questions remain.

Our Tutoring Packages

Next Level Tutors has helped many students perform well on their SAT exams. We have several tutoring packages available to suit the various needs of students preparing to take the SAT exam. Whether your child needs a brief overview of the exam and its basic methods, or your child requires a significant amount of time to prepare, we have the right package for you! All of the tutoring takes place in the comfort of the student's own home, in a relaxed one-on-one environment. This is much better than group study sessions that some agencies offer because it ensures that YOUR student receives his or her tutor's undivided attention and focus. Additionally an individual tutoring environment allows the tutor to monitor YOUR student's progress and identify any weaknesses that he or she needs to overcome. All of our SAT tutors are highly trained and extremely experienced. Not only are they aware of the content of the SAT exam, but they are also well rehearsed on test-taking strageties (timing of each section, math and vocabulary drills, diagnostic testing and screening, improving reading speed, whether to guess on a multiple-choice question versus leaving it blank, etc..).

Tutoring is available during all hours of the day, 7 days per week. All of our SAT preparation packages include an initial diagnostic test, a user-friendly SAT course book, practice exams, vocabulary and math drills, and test-taking strategies. All tutors keep a "Tutors Log" to monitor the strengths, weaknesses, and areas of concern throughout the hours of tutoring that occur.
